Open UP: A TMJ Discussion
TMJ and its World Wide Unawareness...Physicians, including neurologists and ENTs, don’t know any more about it than the public does. We will be discussing the horrors patients go through with countless visits to MDs, neurologists, and ENTs just to turn around and feel like they are crazy. TMJ is not complicated, it just needs to be diagnosed and treated correctly.

In this Episode:
· People can have “bad” bites but no pain. Others can have basically the same bite with tremendous pain. No one knows why.
· In today’s and the next two episodes, we explain what the different “bad bites” look like.
· With an in-the-mouth exam on pain patients, both Pam and Mac look for three occlusal (the way the teeth hit) schemes that occur in almost all pain patients.
· These different schemes are called posterior interferences, torqued mandible, and a deficient maxilla, each will be explained beginning with the deficient maxilla.
· Mac explains how his enlightenment on the deficient maxilla changed his knowledge of helping the TMD pain patients.
· Pam reiterates how deficient maxilla occurs during development.
· The tongue is the sculpture of the jaws and it must do its job. When allowed to do its job, the mouth is shaped like a U. When it can't, the mouth is shaped like a V.
· There must be a balance of pressures between the tongue and the cheeks.
· With V shaped palates, the lower teeth have a hard time knowing where to fit.
· Deficient maxilla usually have crooked teeth, V shaped, and worn front teeth.
· The importance of watching your children and how they breathe.
· The role deficient maxilla has in joint noise, joint pain, and deviated opening and closing of the jaw.
· Pam discusses the needed equipment in diagnosing and treating TMJ pain.
· Mac discusses how jaw tracking equipment can track the backwards movement of the jaw on closing which compresses the TMJ and causes joint issues.
· Orthotics, and how they work in treating TMD, is briefly discussed.
· The difference between an orthotics and a mouth guard, Invisalign, etc.

In this Episode: · Why are you suffering? One example is a torqued mandible where one side hits before the other. · A technique for self-diagnosis of a torqued mandible. · What could have prevented you from having bite disfunction and TMD pain? The answer is proper development of the lower third of the face, i.e. the upper and lower jaw. · Pam explains proper craniofacial development and its dependance on proper nose breathing, airway, and proper position of the tongue during infancy. · Pam explains low tongue posture in children who are mouth breathers and the causes of mouth breathing. · The effects of low tongue posture and mouth breathing is a V shaped upper jaw instead of a U-shaped upper jaw. In adulthood, this creates bites that don’t fit. · When the tongue is not in the roof of the mouth, the cheek muscles put force on upper jaw and squeeze it into the unwanted V shape. · This smaller, narrower upper jaw causes constriction from the front of the mouth to the back of the throat which creates more airway issues. · This backward pressure also pushes the joint (TMJ) back into it socket which creates joint issues such as clicking joints, deviation of jaw on opening, etc. · All of these issues can lead to adult TMD pain. · Pam explains what it means if your child snores. · There are different developmental stages and each one is important and needs to be monitored. Example is changing the V palate into a U palate at a very young age. · Tongue tie is discussed. · At what age should your child be monitored by a trained dentist is discussed. · Allergies and tonsils are discussed and their effect on craniofacial development. · Wearing masks effecting development is discussed. · The importance of early intervention. · The art of dentistry (cosmetics) cannot violate the science (the way the teeth fit) summarizes the Podcast. • Because medical doctors have no answers, and the pain is real, these people fear they have a life-threatening condition.
• It’s common for dentists who specialize in treating TMD pain, to see patients who have been to many other specialties with no help so please know you are not alone.
• Pam shares the story of patient who came with a broken filling not knowing that it was a sign of TMJ/TMD who had no clue her pain was dental and not medical. She went to Pam for a filling and got her life changed. You may have the same story.
• Highly trained dentists not only connect the dots of what’s going on in the mouth, but they also connect the mouth to the body.
• Most MD’s, ENTs, Neurologists, and even dentists, have no clue as to how to help the TMJ patient.
• Time has separated the mouth from the body and this needs to change. TMJ belongs to the dental profession but only to the highly educated ones.
• In the wrong hands, everything about TMD is confusing and the purpose of the Open Up Podcast is change.

Open Up is a Podcast that reveals the truth about TMJ pain. Pain in and around the head is confusing. Is it a migraine, tension headache, earache or TMJ? Pam and Mac give you simple Do It Yourself exercises so you can find out for yourself if you have TMJ. They also describe non-painful TMJ which affects the way the jaw opens and closes. If you have a hard time eating a hamburger because you can’t open wide, odds are you have TMJ. If your jaw joint makes noise, odds are you have TMJ. Is your head pain a migraine or is it TMJ? What does your “bite” have to do with TMJ?
In this Episode:
Trigeminal Nerve is responsible for all the pain in your face.
Ear pain can be exclusively from the TMJ joint.
Head pain is usually caused by muscle pain from overworked muscles that operate the jaw.
The only way to prevent adult TMJ is to start with proper treatment of the child during their developmental stage.
